Introduction
Welcome to the fifth thing in 12 Things SWKLS. This month we will be learning about OneClickdigital. OneClickdigital is an electronic audio book service available through the State Library of Kansas. Through OneClick, you and your patrons can check out and listen to audiobooks on smartphones, handheld devices, and computers.
The activities for this lesson are due September 30, 2016 at 11:59 pm central time and are worth 3 credit hours. Estimated work time: 1-3 hours
Take a deep breath and grab a cup of coffee or your favorite pop. This lesson is a little longer than some of the rest, but we want to make sure you have the information you need.

Note: I know a lot of you use OneClick regularly. If that’s the case, I would recommend still completing the lesson as a refresher or on a device you don’t normally use. Lianne’s archived webinar under Activity 1 is also very informative even if you’ve been a user a long time.

The State Library has facilitated a cooperative arrangement which allows all libraries and the patrons that they serve to access a collection of digital ebooks and audiobooks. Materials purchased for the shared collection by any Kansas library are available to users throughout the state.
What is OneClickdigital?
The only only audiobooks available through the state. Contains mostly fiction, but some popular non-fiction.
Note: this service needs you to login through the Kansas Library eCard (KSLC) and do a registration step to create your personal username & password. All other digital book services just use the Kansas Library eCard itself.
Exercises: (Due September 30, 2016 at 11:59 pm CDT)
Tools you will need:
- A computer or Internet enabled device.
- Your library’s tablet would work perfectly for this!!

- An Internet connection
- Your Kansas Library eCard
- A printer
- An email address
Activity 1: (47 min)
Activity 2: (10 – 15 min)
- Print out the Digital Book eLending Pamphlet (directions on where to find it are below):
- Note: This document is designed to be printed two sided.
- Go to the State Library of Kansas Website.
- Find the Librarians Tab and hover your mouse over it.
- Click on Promotional Materials under the Statewide Services section.
- Click on the link or the Digital Book eLending pamphlet and print it out.
- Go to the Librarian Training Page and find the Librarian FAQ Sheet. (This can be found under the Digital Book eLending Section.) This is a great resource to study and keep at the front desk or your desk for any questions you may receive.
Activity 3: (10 min)
- Signup for a OneClickdigital account if you haven’t already.
- This is the only digital book service through the state that requires a username and a password. For the rest of them, you can just login with the Kansas Library eCard directly.
- Sign in with your personal Library eCard then choose the OneClickdigital Audiobooks Registration link.
- Fill out form.
- Remember to write down your username and password and keep it in a safe place.

Activity 4: (10 – 15 min)
- Print off the OneClickdigital instructions for your device.
- Instructions can be found by going to http://kslib.info/digitalbooks and clicking the instructions link under OneClickdigital.
- Install the OneClickdigital software or app on your device.
- (If you already have the app or program installed, but haven’t used it for a few weeks I would recommend updating or reinstalling it.)
Activity 5: (10 – 15 min)
- Use the instructions you printed off on Activity 4 to:
- Search for and check out a book.
- Download and listen to part of the book.
- Bookmark a section.
- Return the book (or return another book).
Activity 6: (10 – 15 min)
- Repeat the Process and checkout another book.
- You can decide whether you want to want to return it or keep it to listen to.
- Put a book on hold.
- Check to see how long the wait hold list is for the book you put on hold.
- How many patrons are in front of you?
- Also note how many copies of the item the State Library has.
- When your book becomes available, you will receive an email message and the book will automatically be checked out to your account.
- Find the recheck button.
Activity 7: (10 – 15 min)
- Find the OneClickdigital stats for your area
- Go to www.kslib.info
- Roll your mouse over the Librarians Tab
- Click on Statistics under the Digital Book eLending section.
- Open the Circulation by Zip for 2016 and Total Patron Accounts by Zip.
- Depending on your library, you may want to look at surrounding zip codes as well.

- This is the last section! *whew* 😉

I think the Librarians Section gets overlooked quite a bit. I always forget about it, too. It’s amazing the parts of a website we don’t see when you go to the same website over and over to look up stuff. I forgot about all of the goodies in there as well.

3. Sometimes OneClickDigital has a difficult time loading the search screen on my android phone. Sometimes it takes quite awhile to load and I am forced to exit out of the search and try multiple times for it to load. Other times it will not load completely (none of the books will show up or the search bar) but when I try to load it a second time it will load properly. Also there have been times when OneClickDigital would not cooperate and so I had to delete and reload the app before it would work.

I imagine several people have been excited about seeing the Dr. Who books!
Concerning the slowness and and difficulty searching for books, you might try it on a different wireless other than at the library and see if it works better if you have a chance.
It sounds like almost everyone has been surprised by their checkouts!

3.What issues do you see patrons having with this service? Or… what issues have your patrons had? the biggest issue we have is that they can’t remember their username and password when they register. We always stress to them to write it down.

Thankfully, most of the time, it doesn’t seem like you have to wait too long for books that have been put on hold.

And… it seems like there is always at least something to check out!
1) The activities format did seem to keep it more organized, for me.
2) I still like to hold a book in my hands. I only have a desktop and an Iphone. I don’t have any of the other devices. Although, I can see where they are a good thing for those who do. It gets people reading!
3.) I had one patron let his state card expire. I renewed for him, because he was wanting to get an account for digital books. He is a farmer and likes to listen to books while he is in the field. It is easier for him to use the OneClickDigital rather than try to carry an audio book and player with him. He has told his daughter about it and she will be getting a state card and an account with OneClick, as well.

6.) I was pleased to see our patrons using their state card and the checkout number seems pretty good for Ness City.

I love that you have a farmer that uses the service and that he told his daughter about it! I personally listen to audios from OneClickdigital on my phone every morning on the way to work. The nice thing about having it on my phone is that I can also take the audios into the house to listen, too. Or… on a walk as well.
You may already know this, but OneClickdigital should work on your iPhone as well.
1. I really liked this format given the amount of information that was provided for the lesson. It also allowed me to complete some areas and then come back to finish more.
2. I learned I could look up stats, how to reset my password (I hadn’t written it down), and that if you listen on your computer it doesn’t save your place. I also learned (from Caleb) that you can quit having to reenter your pw when searching on iPhone app if you log in to computer and have the pw saved.
3. The biggest conern I have is just getting the patron set up the first time. Rarely do they do this at home by themselves, we almost always have to do it with them at the library. However, once they get set up I think most navigate it quite well.
4. We have 49 patrons registered in our 67878. I need to look up the zips for Kendall and Coolidge too.
5. We have 758 2016 checkouts in the 67878.
6. I was very surprised by these numbers (happily). And we seem to be doing very well comparatively to other libraries in region and size.
**Additional questions I have…anyone know if you can use bluetooth feature in car to have the audio go through car speakers instead of phone? And, when playing an audiobook on a phone, does it use data if not connected to wireless, or is it just when downloading?**

Depending on your car model and year, you should be able to use the Bluetooth feature in your car. You’ll have to try it and see if it works! My husband’s vehicle has Bluetooth, but it’s an older car (2009) and only works for phone calls. He has to have a special adapter, but the adapter wasn’t too expensive and it works well. My car is older and I don’t have Bluetooth or I’d try. Charlene is going to try in her car this weekend and report back.
The app only uses data when it is downloading the book. Although, it may use a little bit of data to check if you refresh your book list or are searching for books.

The registration is tricky for sure! I can see people getting frustrated easily. Most of the calls we get are usually that people can’t get into their accounts. Thankfully you can easily reset your password or call the State Library to have them look up your username.

You may have seen me post this already, but I use OneClick to listen to books on the way to and from work.
I liked the lesson broken up into segments.
The hardest thing for my patrons would be to set this up on their device. It is much easier than I had expected.
We have 136 accounts and 19 checkouts.
