This last weekend the Grant County Library in Ulysses was featured in the Garden City Telegram in an article entitled “The allure of the library”. Check out this article to learn more about some of the library staff, their patrons, and library activities.

Mathes said she’s seen the Grant County Public Library grow up from just a place to store books into a community learning center.
The community-oriented library could become more so in the fall, when it begins to incorporate the Family Place Libraries, which is a nationwide program that provides a network of community services and education.
According to its website, Family Place Libraries is a network of children’s librarians that believe literacy begins at birth and that libraries can help build healthy communities by nourishing healthy families.
Mathes said the program gives community organizations a chance to educate families on services they provide.
“For example, representatives from the High Plains Education Cooperative or health department may walk around and talk to families about what the organization has to offer to the family,” she said.
Mathes said families then become familiar with those representatives and services.
“That way, they have someone from the organization when they need those services for their family,” she said.
The Finney County Public Library also will begin to incorporate the program, along with NorthWest Kansas Library System, located in Hays.
“It makes your library more of a community other than just a place with books. Anything we can do to branch out, we try to do that,” she said.
